The Story Behind the Song

When I began working on this album, I really wanted to write some songs about the birth of Jesus that would be different. I wanted the songs to come from perspectives that are not the norm for Christmas songs. So often, Christmas songs tend to focus on the “manger” theme without really venturing into the lives of the people that were witnesses to this great event. I wanted songs that show how Jesus’ arrival had an impact on everyone.

Perhaps one of the most fascinating characters in all of scripture is Simeon (Luke 2:25 -35). Although he’s only mentioned once in a very short passage of scripture, he has always been an interesting figure to me. We don’t know much about him, other than he was told by God that he would not die before he saw the Messiah. He must have been a very devout, very righteous, God-fearing man! This song is kind of an “ode” to Simeon who, once he saw Jesus, knew that his life was now complete.
