Eric Gwin - The Calling

Lyrics

One More Day

Words and Music by Eric Gwin.

The Story Behind the Song

This song was inspired in much the same way as "Alive". We often get so involved in everything around us that we forget about where it all comes from. God blesses us in so many ways, and often we don't take the time to notice. It's a shame, because there's so much beauty that we're missing.

The music for this song was in my head when I got in the car one morning to take my kids to daycare. As I was driving along, listening to my girls giggle in the back seat, I was overwhelmed as I noticed the sun rising. God gives us so much to be thankful for every day. These lyrics came very quickly as I thought about all these great blessings.

When writing, the music has always been the easy part for me. I get tunes in my head all the time, so that part is usually the first step to writing a song. Lyrics, however, don't come quite as fast.

I was thankful that the first verse and a half of this song came quickly, due to the aforementioned inspiration. When I sat down to complete the lyrics, the inspiration didn't flow so freely. I really wanted to finish the song right then, so I had to come up with lyrics for the rest of the second  verse and the bridge immediately.

As any songwriter can tell you, there are many different tricks that you can use to come up with a hard-to-find lyric. One that I have found very useful is a little method called acrostic poetry. When writing acrostic poetry, the method is to take a word (preferably one that has a connection with the subject matter of the poem or song) and use each letter of the word as the beginning of each line. This is an interesting way to challenge your mind and get your creative juices flowing, especially when working within the time and meter of a musical lyric.

I had eight lines of lyrics that I still had to write, so I needed two 4-letter words to work from. When I think of the blessings of God, two words come to mind: Hope and Love, two of the greatest blessings that he has given us. I believe it was only fitting to use these words as the framework for the rest of the lyrics.

The Lyrics

The mist settles on the dawn.
Another day begins.
The beauty of the earth
goes unnoticed again.
Beauty from above
slips once again into view.
You show yourself to all
through another day brand new.

Chorus: We have so much to do.
We have so much to say.
So much distracts us from the view.
You've given us one more day.

Light begins to fade
and darkness settles in.
The stars are out tonight.
Another day comes to an end.
Hello again, my Lord.
Over time I hope to see
people living within your love,
everyone on bended knee.

Chorus

Bridge: Life comes from only you.
Our help comes from your love.
Vindication is found in you,
eternity with you above.

Chorus
