Eric Gwin - The Calling

Lyrics

Seek His Face

Words and Music by Eric Gwin.

The Story Behind the Song

Back in 1991, following the release of Ariel's second album, I began doing a lot of writing and recording. Somewhere in the process of writing songs for Ariel's third album (which never materialized), I decided that I wanted to write a musical. I wrote and even recorded demos of several songs, including this one. The musical, titled "One Nation Under God," was to be a somewhat patriotic view of evangelism. Although the musical was never finished, many good songs came from this period, including "By Your Love" (from Refuge), "The Words to Say" and "Without Love" (from Q's A Special Occasion), and this song, which would have been on the third Ariel album, had we finished it.

When I originally wrote this song, I immediately loved the music. So much, in fact, that I recorded a demo of it before finding lyrics I was happy with. I finally sat down in 2004 and rewrote the lyrics so they made more sense.

The message of this song is simple: If you're constantly seeking the face of God, you don't have time to seek anything the world has to offer. He will always be there with you to carry you through anything that the world throws at you.

The Lyrics

So the storms are raging around you
And you feel like giving up.
You need somewhere to turn.
You want something to hold on to
Something that will not move
Something anchored in truth
Well, let me help you with a plan:
Leave it all in the Master's hand
He is there in everything,
And he will help you stand.

Chorus: Seek his face and you'll be alright.
With my Lord, you'll be satisfied.
Trust in him with all your might
Seek his face and you'll be alright.

Take a good look around you
The face of God is everywhere
There's no need to feel alone.
When you feel like you can't stand up
Against what the world throws at you,
There is one who feels your pain.
He says, "Come to me, I love you
I'll never leave you behind.
Turn around and I'll be there
You'll be happy with what you'll find."

Chorus

Bridge:
The Lord is reaching out to help you through
Just take his hand, he's reaching out to you

Chorus out
